5 Ways to Handle Change Without Losing Yourself

Change is uncomfortable. It’s like walking through fire- you feel the heat, you panic, and sometimes it burns. But the trick is not to run from it. Over the years, I’ve learned a few ways to face change, whether it’s a school mishap, a friendship falling apart, or just life flipping your routine upside down. Here’s what’s helped me the most.

01
Pause and Breathe
When something unexpected happens, our first reaction is panic. I remember when my group project got deleted at the last minute. My heart raced, my hands shook, and I wanted to give up. Then I stopped. I took a deep breath, and suddenly, I could think. Fire isn’t only about destruction, it’s also light. When you pause, you give yourself a chance to see the next step clearly instead of being consumed by fear.
02
Ask “What can I do next?”
It’s easy to get stuck in “Why me?” mode. I did that too, feeling unfairly targeted by life’s chaos. But that question didn’t help me, it only made me feel powerless. Instead, I started asking, “What can I do next?” Small, practical actions, like redoing the project with my team, turned the situation around. Focusing on the next step transforms fear into energy you can actually use.
03
Embrace the temporary nature of things
Nothing lasts forever- not mistakes, failures, or even embarrassment. This is something Buddhism always reminds me of. When the project disaster happened, I kept thinking the world had ended. But really, it was just a spark of change. Fire teaches that everything burns and then becomes something new. Remembering that change is temporary makes it easier to face.
04
Look for the hidden lesson
Every challenge carries a lesson if you’re willing to see it. When I had to redo the project, I realized my first plan hadn’t included enough teamwork or communication. The fire had burned away what wasn’t working and showed me what needed to change. Change often gives clarity, but only if we pay attention. Ask yourself, “What is this teaching me?”, and take notes for next time.
05
Keep moving forward, even if it’s small steps
Change doesn’t get easier by waiting it out. You have to step into it. I started tackling the project one small piece at a time with my team. Each section we completed felt like putting out a spark before it turned into a blaze. Forward movement, no matter how small, builds confidence and momentum. That’s how fire becomes warmth instead of destruction.

Life will always throw change at you. Some of it will feel like tiny sparks, some will feel like roaring flames. But change doesn’t have to destroy you. When you pause, focus on what’s next, remember it’s temporary, look for lessons, and take one small step at a time, you can walk through the fire and come out stronger on the other side.
